A fantastic experience of the very best of traditional and authentic Ireland awaits in the summer of 2023 in the hands of expert Irish dance teacher and choreographer Edwina Guckian.
Edwina’s Irish Culture Retreat will run from 17 – 21 July 2023 in the picturesque town of Carrick-on-Shannon in County Leitrim in the northwest of Ireland and will make an ideal holiday immersion in the Irish way of life.
Modelled on Edwina’s renowned Áirc Damhsa Culture Club, now in its 18th year, the retreat will feature daily dance classes in the sean nós dance style, old style Irish step dance, two hand dance, set dancing and the history and traditions associated with them.
A new collection of steps and dances that Edwina has specifically choreographed for the Irish Culture Retreat 2023 will also be covered.
The retreat also includes workshops in music, song, dance and crafts, as well as a series of music and dance sessions in the local teach ceoil or music house.
Participants will stay in a boutique heritage hotel in the heart of Carrick-on-Shannon, renowned for its hearty welcome and local cuisine, and the programme will also take in folklore trails, concerts, performances, a céilí with Áirc Damhsa and special guest dancers, musicians and singers. Transport will be provided to and from all programmed events.
Enjoy traditional music sessions in the local Teach Ceoil
Adventures on land and water across the Leitrim landscape as well as visits to historical and heritage sites are included in the package for the week, while professional photography and videography of your time on the Irish Culture Retreat will be sent to you directly afterwards.
An in-depth Irish experience is one to be cherished, and the close sense of community fostered among the group will be a highlight of the Irish Culture Retreat.
Coming from a family steeped in the tradition of music and dance, Edwina’s dance style is greatly influenced by the traditions she grew up with across counties Leitrim and Roscommon.
Having started teaching dancing at the age of 16, she has taught her steps and shared the stage with some of Ireland’s most influential acts, including Altan, De Danann, Dervish, Frankie Gavin, Kíla, Martin Hayes, Séamus Begley and Laoise Kelly to name but a few.
Her Áirc Damhsa Culture Club now has over 500 members in nine counties in Ireland and one in New York.
The wild and spectacular County Leitrim enjoys the relaxed rhythms of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and the untamed spirit of the Wild Atlantic Way. It’s the ideal place to savour an Irish cultural experience.
Only a two-hour drive from Dublin and Belfast, and a mere 45 minutes from Ireland West Airport, Leitrim is a rural haven for explorers and adventurers who cherish a slower pace of life and spending quality time in the great outdoors.
